Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychological condition. Commonly experienced by military veterans and first responders, it is characterized by distressing memories of the traumatic event, negative changes in mood, and heightened vigilance.

If you are struggling to recover from trauma in the line of duty or a tragic event, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) may offer new hope.

NeuroHealth Treatment Centers is proud to offer PTSD treatment with TMS therapy for patients in Fort Lauderdale and all of South Florida.

Multiple studies have found that TMS is effective in treating PTSD. It is often combined with more traditional methods such as therapy and medication to help patients cope with symptoms and find long-lasting relief.

Call 954-417-7575 today to book your complimentary evaluation with our clinical staff. We can determine if TMS therapy is right for you based on your symptoms, your medical history, and the treatments you’ve tried before. Our comfortable office is outfitted with state-of-the-art, FDA-cleared TMS equipment for individualized treatment of PTSD and other conditions.

PTSD Treatment with TMS Therapy: How Does It Work?

To put it simply, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation can help restore balance to the way the brain processes information and regulates emotional response.

PTSD has many potential causes. These include being in an auto accident, surviving a natural disaster, being the victim of a crime, and events witnessed by first responders and military servicemembers.

Feelings of shock and distress are normal after a traumatic experience. However, if the symptoms persist for more than one month, it is classified by the DSM-5 as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

People with PTSD experience changes in brain function, including:

At a neurochemical level, PTSD is also associated with dysregulation of the body’s stress response system. This includes alterations in cortisol and other stress hormones, as well as imbalances in key neurotransmitters.

Together, these changes can make the brain and body of someone with PTSD feel like they’re in a constant state of heightened alertness — even when no real threat is present.

How TMS Can Help

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation works by delivering targeted pulses of magnetic energy to the areas of the brain involved in stress response and mood regulation. One of the most important of these regions is the left dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which is often underactive in patients with PTSD.

At NeuroHealth Treatment Centers, we use the Nexstim SmartFocus® TMS system to treat PTSD and other psychological conditions. This FDA-cleared technology uses an MRI scan to precisely locate the left DLPFC and provide personalized and accurate treatment.

Targeted stimulation of the left DLPFC helps to restore the brain’s ability to regulate the amygdala. As this connection is strengthened through repeat TMS sessions, patients often experience:

By normalizing how neurons communicate, PTSD treatment with TMS therapy also supports balanced neurotransmitter activity. This can help the brain move out of the constant fight-or-flight mode and into more stable functioning, which often results in improved mood and emotional stability.

Neuroplasticity is another key benefit of TMS therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Patients with PTSD often get “stuck” in patterns of fear and hyperalertness. TMS treatment helps to stimulate the brain’s ability to form new connections, weakening maladaptive patterns and supporting healthier responses to stress and emotional triggers.

Does TMS Work for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

PTSD is a complex condition. Many patients benefit from a combination of therapies to manage symptoms and restore their quality of life. Whether TMS will work for you depends on several different factors, including your unique brain function, the symptoms you experience, and treatment history.

A growing body of research supports the use of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for PTSD. Key findings include:

Strong Clinical Outcomes in Veterans with PTSD

In a 2026 study published in the journal of Brain Stimulation, researchers examined the effectiveness of TMS protocols in treating military veterans with PTSD. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) was one of the protocols included in the study.

Approximately 63% of patients had a clinically meaningful response to rTMS. Nearly half of the patients receiving rTMS entered remission, meaning they no longer met the DSM-5 criteria for a PTSD diagnosis.

Consistent Symptom Improvement Across Multiple Studies

A systematic review and meta-analysis in Frontiers in Psychiatry provides further support for these findings. Researchers analyzed seven studies where combat veterans with PTSD received some form of TMS therapy, including rTMS.

Multiple studies showed that TMS led to a substantial reduction in symptoms. On average, symptom severity improved by 20 points on standardized measurement scales. The strongest results were noted among patients who received 20–30 rTMS sessions targeting the prefrontal cortex.

Much of the research has focused on the applications of TMS for veterans. However, it is important to note that anyone with PTSD may be a candidate.

PTSD treatment with TMS therapy may be an option whether you served our country, spend every day keeping our South Florida communities safe, or have been through a traumatic experience. Contact NeuroHealth Treatment Centers today.

What Is the Success Rate of TMS for PTSD?

Clinically speaking, “success” means a substantial reduction in symptoms that interfere with daily life. TMS does not “cure” PTSD, but it can make the symptoms less severe and help patients manage the condition more effectively.

In clinical studies, approximately 60–65% of patients experience meaningful improvement in PTSD symptoms. Many also achieve relief from co-occurring conditions such as major depression.

For a variety of reasons, you might find that first-line treatments are ineffective. Counseling may be too uncomfortable, and medications take time to work and can have unpleasant side effects. TMS is safe and non-invasive. A full course of rTMS (usually 30–36 sessions) can lead to positive improvements in your mental health and complement other treatments.

Is PTSD Treatment with TMS Therapy Right for You?

The effects of a traumatic experience can linger for months or even years. People with PTSD often feel like they have to face it by themselves, whether due to the stoic mindset expected of soldiers and first responders or because they feel like others can’t relate.

You are not alone. NeuroHealth Treatment Centers provides innovative and transformative treatments for PTSD. Every member of our staff is committed to offering you the highest standard of care and support. We listen closely to your needs and goals and develop a custom treatment plan.
